forces it to reflect on current history. To be sure, a hundred years of engaged thinking have made terrifyingly clear the dialectic of engagement, but this does not give any dispensation from historical consciousness.
Löwith ignores the practical consequences of the sciences as they are applied to technology. He is content to locate the presuppositions of their philosophical self-understanding in a context of delusion brought about by the pragmatization and historicization of the natural understanding of the world, because in principle he cannot acknowledge that the relationship between science and philosophy has been reversed; that philosophy has to pose itself the practical tasks set by the objective consequences of a technology that has been transformed by science and has become socially effective, or it has to cease being philosophy.
The single outcome of modern science in which Löwith shows a certain interest is the penetration into outer space. This appears exorbitant to Löwith, not only in the literal sense of the word but also because on account of it the Earth’s place at the center of the natural world view is displaced objectively. But is not this rather a question of something merely becoming manifest at this stage—a transformation that has been relentlessly underway ever since humans sustained their lives by the labor of their own hands? Marx once objected that Feuerbach “does not see that the world surrounding him is not something directly given and the same from all eternity but the product of industry and of the state of society in the sense that it is a historical product, the result of the activity of a whole succession of generations, each standing on the shoulders of the preceding one, developing further its industry and commerce, and modifying its social order according to changed needs”; Löwith is well acquainted with this passage.
